Millions of dollars are spent every year all around the globe on advertising and research to try to stop people smoking. There are ads on TV, at the bus stops, in the newspaper, even on the cigarette packets themselves! Everyone is telling someone that they should “Quit”. However, after all these years, and despite all those gruesome photos, still people don’t quit, and every day new people, young people, start smoking.
Maybe these very ads that are designed to make us queezy when thinking about smoking is the one reason people to continue to smoke. People cant sit down these days to watch a normal (30 minute) show on TV without being interrupted by a “Quit” ad. Non smokers watch in disgust as horrific graphics and statistics are panned across the screen.
Smokers, on the other hand, are reminded that they have a nice packet of ‘Peter Jacksons’ in their hand. Upon seeing these images smokers may also become upset or angry… The best remedy? Have a cigarette to calm the nerves!
So perhaps “Quit” smoking techniques need to be revised. Perhaps there should be a total ban on the mention of cigarettes in any form of media. Maybe then, and only then, can smokers finally be given the opportunity to forget to have that cigarette.
